A New Name & A New Mission

5 03 2009

The Richard I. Bong WWII Heritage Center in Superior has taken on a new name and has expanded its mission.  As stated by their website:

RICHARD I. BONG VETERANS HISTORICAL CENTER
The Mission of the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center is to honor the memory of Major Bong and all the veterans of WWII and later conflicts whose sacrifices maintain our Freedoms. The Center is an educational resource that collects and preserves the tangible legacy of these veterans and their home front supporters. In addition the Center perpetuates their ideals, principles, and leadership skills for today as well as future generations.

Currently in their gallery:
TRENCH ART
Trench art is the modern name given to objects made from the leftovers of war either by soldiers, civilians or prisoners of war. The BHC’s newest exhibit “Trench Art” illustrates, via 20 WWII artifacts, the skill and creativity used by servicemen to craft works of art from the leftovers of war. Highlighted in the exhibit are several ashtrays, cigarette lighters and lamp fixtures pieced together from spent brass shell casings.

And, of course, spend some time with Marge.
